For many drivers, the first sign of engine problems is when the check engine light on the instrument panel turns on. However, there are many other signs that can be an early indication of an engine issue that must be addressed by your Ford dealer right away. The sooner you can correct problems with your engine, the longer its lifespan will be.

1. Overheating

Overheating is a major problem that can warp your engine if left unaddressed. The most common causes of engine overheating are trouble with the coolant system or a leaking radiator. When your car overheats too frequently, it can lead to catastrophic failure that may require you to replace your engine entirely. If your car is overheating on the road, you should pull over immediately until it cools down.

2. Rough Idle

Rough idling occurs when the engine produces a higher RPM even when it is idle. Typically, this is associated with a bad spark plug or engine misfiring. To avoid severe damage to your engine, you should bring your car for service when you notice rough idling.

3. Knocking

A knocking engine is an unusual sound that should be addressed right away. Sometimes, engine knocking is the result of pressure in the combustion chamber, which is referred to as a spark knock. Small spark knocks may not be an issue, but loud and heavy knocking can damage the engine. Damage to the pistons, crack rings, and gaskets can be caused by engine knocking.

4. Ignition Issues

Trouble getting your car started can be associated with a faulty ignition coil, wiring issues, or even old spark plugs. However, ignition issues are also closely associated with misfiring and backfiring when you are operating your vehicle on the road, which can be a potential hazard. Ignition issues can also be related to an old battery or a failing alternator.

5. Leaks

Finally, leaks of any kind are a cause for concern. Leaks from your engine can be associated with motor oil, coolant, transmission fluid, and much more. When any part of your engine is leaking, this means that your engine is at risk of not being properly lubricated. Without adequate lubrication, parts of your engine will experience too much friction, overheat, or become warped. The moment you notice any leaks, you should schedule service.
Your engine is the heart of your vehicle, so you should always respond promptly to engine issues. Sometimes, engine issues can be fixed by topping up motor oil, while other times, repairs may be more advanced.
